14 days amazing Morocco

Day 1: Marrakesh – Essaouira

After your arrival in Marrakesh, we will pick you up at the airport and take you to the formerly Portuguese harbor city of Essaouira. While roaming the Medina’s winding alleys, you will easily get to understand while the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, or the Rolling Stones were fascinated by this city’s charm. The medina of Essaouira has been on the UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage since 2001. You will spend the night in a riad.

Day 2: Essaouira – Taroudant

From Essaoiuia we continue toward Taroudant, a 11th century city founded by the Saad dynasty. Connoisseurs lovingly call it “Marrakech’s little sister”. You spend the night in a hotel.

Day 3: Taroudant

In the morning we will go for a walk and see the Berber souk and the Arab souk. The afternoon offers a trip to the palm trees in the oasis of Tiout, 25 miles away. On our way there, we will see orange groves, olive and argan trees. After a walk through the oasis we will return to Taroudant.

Day 4: Taroudant – Tafraout

The Anti Atlas oasis town of Tafraoute, located south-east of Agadir, is our next destination. Colossal granite rocks surround the place that is situated in one of the most beautiful regions of Morocco – which is particularly famous for the stunning almond blossom at the end of February. You will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 5: Tafraout – Tata

Leaving Tafraoute, our way leads us through canyons, Berber villages, and oases of palm trees toward Tata which is inhabited mainly by Shilha people and Haratin, descendants of slaves. You will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 6: Tata – Zagora

“52 day to Timbuctoo” says a sign in the center of Zagora; the sign itself has meanwhile been renewed. It depicts the place’s former importance as a caravansary on the boundaries of the desert. In the gardens of the desert of Amezrou you can see traditional irrigation systems in use up to the present day. Channels and gates have systematically supplied water for the land. You will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 7: Zagora – Merzouga

There are two options how to continue this trip: One leg leads us to Tazzarine over unpaved roads and then continues to Merzouga on tarmac. The other route is an unpaved road only. It is a direct connection to Merzouga and a part of the world famous “Dakar Rally”. The landscape between Zagora and Merzouga is dominated by rock desert in countless variations. The tiny oasis of Merzouga is located on the boundaries of Erg Chebbi, the greatest dune range in Morocco. You will spend the night in a Kasbah hotel in the dunes.

Day 8: Merzouga

After breakfast, we will make an excursion to Rissani, the first Moroccan royal city. You will explore the old palace of the king and the famous market place. Upon request, a visit of a traditional Hamam is possible and in the fading light of dusk you will leave for the desert on the back of a camel. In the midst of the dunes you will spend the night in a Berber tent.

Day 9: Merzouga

After breakfast in the desert you will return to your Kasbah hotel. Enjoy a quiet day in the desert or explore the surrounding villages together with your personal guide.

Day 10: Merzouga – Erfoud – Tinerhir – Boumalne Dadès

Leaving the desert we will reach Erfoud on an unpaved road and drive toward the valley of Todrha in Tinerhir. After visiting the steep walls of the canyon we will have lunch in a restaurant that is typical for the area. Our trip ends in Dadès Gorges where you will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 11: Boumalne Dadès – Ouarzazate

An unpaved road takes us to Boutaghar and in the mountains we’ll see caves that are inhabited by Berbers up to the present day. A ride through the Rose Valley leads us to Quarzazate. We will see the famous Kasbahs and spend the night in a hotel.

Day 12: Ouarzazate – Marrakech

The fortified village (ksar) of Ait Benhaddou, protected as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since 1987, is our next destination. The labyrinth of houses, towers, and magazines is a magnificent example of the traditional adobe architecture of the Berber people. Via an unpaved road we reach the mountain village of Telouet, which is the location of Dar Glaoui, the former residence of one of the most powerful Berber princes. Afterwards we leave toward Marrakesh where our journey began. Here you will spend the night in a beautifully restored riad in the medina quarter. In the evening, a walk through the souk and across the Djemaa el Fna brings the day to a perfect end.

Day 13: Marrakech

After breakfast, you will discover why Marrakesh attracts one million tourists every year… Having visited Menara palace and its gardens you will see the Koutoubia mosque, the famous tombs of the Saadi dynasty, and Yves Saint Laurent’s Majorelle Gardens. In the afternoon we will have a walk through the souks of the historic district and we will also see the ancient Islamic college Ben Youssef Medersa.

Day 14: Marrakesh

In the morning there is a chance for more sightseeing depending on the time of your departure. Afterwards you will be transfered to the airport.
